Ever since I tried the peanut butter donut from Mary Street Café at Taste Perth, I promised I’d get to the cafe one day. I finally made it last week and was delighted to also find a new community space taking shape … the Mary Street Piazza.

Even before I made it into the café I was excited to see the new piazza taking shape over the road.

As it was 2pm I decided on a late lunch, and being on a semi health kick I decided against a cake, opting instead for a toasted vegetarian sandwich. The doorstop sandwich kept me busy until my colleague arrived for our meeting. Half way through I contemplated asking if I could take the other half home, but the moreish taste made me keep going.

Sadly this meant the donut was out of the question, but at least that means I’ll have to go back again. The range of sweets on display definitely inspired a second visit.

It’s a long way to the basin if you want to wash your hands
As I sat on the couch that night not needing any dinner I pondered …
- Mary Street Café is a great spot to sit and watch the world go by.
- I have no doubt that the piazza will become ‘the place to be’ when it’s finished.
- The mind boggles about how the space can be used, for impromptu music, art exhibitions and markets. Can’t wait to see what happens.
- The piazza is another great example of how a Council can help create engaging community spaces.
