Review: Community spirit and design at Mr Finch Noshery

It’s not often that I visit a café twice in the same day but Mr Finch Noshery in Fremantle had me mesmerised. I couldn’t take it all in in one quick visit.

Originally I popped in for a quick bite before a movie. Since I’m on a bit of a health kick  at the moment I bypassed the massive muffins and went for a sandwich which turned out to be the perfect choice. It was just enough to stop my stomach rumbling in the darkness, and not so much that I’d be in danger of falling asleep. Mind you since I was seeing the latest Woody Allen movie there was little danger of that.

The movie was starting in 15 minutes so it was a lightning stop visit. What I saw in those 15 minutes was just enough to spark the senses and make me return for a more leisurely look after the movie. On the second trip I languished for an hour and a half drinking in the tranquil surroundings … and a latte.

Situated in an old Fremantle home the décor was a big hit. Beautiful wallpaper, comfy chairs and a range of rooms to choose from depending on your mood.

I was soon eyeing off the backroom for focus groups (top photo). When I enquired about hiring the room the ladies said they liked to keep it free in case the people from the business across the road popped in. How often do you hear of a business turning back money on the off chance that a regular patron might come in? Talk about loyalty and community, spirit these ladies have it in spades.

In another example of community spirit, as I sat reading the paper a gentleman in the far corner began strumming away on his guitar. Evidently he’s there most afternoons and it was clear that he wasn’t being ushered out to make room for other patrons. Neither was I for that matter as I was left to enjoy the music even though I’d finished my latte ages ago. There was no guilty feelings that I should buy a second cup.

Good food, great service, beautiful décor and a free show, what’s not to like.

As I sat listening to the guitar I pondered …

  1. The mother and daughter team behind Mr Finch have done a terrific job, it’s no wonder this café is still going several years on.
  2. They get bonus points for ‘Noshery’, who doesn’t love a good noshery.
  3. Any design students would do well to check this out and if these ladies ever wanted a career change they could easily step into interior design.
  4. Can’t wait to see the designs they have planned for the new area out the back.
  5. I hope the business owners across the road realise what a gem they have and repay the loyalty they receive ten fold.
  6. As the sun streamed in the back room I thought there’s a real danger of the owners finding me on the doorstep in the morning, suitcase in hand, asking if I could move in.
