Review: New York in Perth at East Village

What happens if you have a hankering for a Reuben sandwich or classic New York pizza but you live on the other side of the planet? What happens if you live way down under in Perth Western Australia? Yesterday I found the answer.

Having missed lunch and getting out of a CBD meeting at 2.30pm it was time to search for sustenance. Fortunately I was in Railway Lane, 140 William Street so there was a lot of choice. I’ve been dying to try some of the new restaurants at 140 so today was the day and East Village was the winner. The cute window boxes and welcoming smiles drew me in.

While I was tempted by the sound of the burgers, the Chicken Maryland and the spaghetti, I was between meals and so a light salad was the go, or so I thought.

I picked the pumpkin and beetroot salad. When the meal came it was huge. My first thought was maybe it was meant to be shared with a table of three people. The spinach leaves were surrounded with baby beetroot wedges, soft roasted pumpkin, pine nuts and creamy feta cheese. The tarragon balsamic dressing really tied it all together. If I’m honest there could have been a little bit more dressing to cover the spinach which was a bit dry on its own, but this was quickly overcome by adding some pumpkin or fetta to your fork. It was beautiful and incredibly filling dish.

The atmosphere was interesting with tables, booths and a pizza/bar area where you could sit up at the cooks area. The open kitchen made it easy to watch the chef as he rolled countless balls of pizza dough, getting ready for the nights service.

As I at an apple and mandarin for dinner that night I pondered …

  1. I will definitely be back for the Seafood Chowder.
  2. I may even make it to breakfast one day, but will probably need a breakfast meeting to get me into the CBD at that time.
  3. When I first read the menu I thought it was a bit pricey but if all the meals are as large as the salad you could easily share a meal.
