This year the powers that be declared loud and often that WA Day should be spent relaxing, a message contrary to the mass warblings about getting up off the coach. The significance of relaxing on this most important day for our state is beyond me. Where in the States heritage does relaxation come in? Haven’t we been trying to escape the bludgers tag? Clearly some residents took matters into their own hands.
The morning started okay with little sign of movement on the city streets. But then a rogue group of sportsmen took to Langely Park to perform push up, sit ups and a round of jogging. Clearly they’d missed the memo.
Moments away up in Kings Park the majority of Perth residents were heeding the call. Sipping soya lattes in the coffee shop or languishing on the lawn. Even the Swan River was devoid of its usual surfcats and leisure crafts. In Northbridge however it was a different story … anarchy ruled.
Children were being encouraged to litter the area with paper plans.
Others were dancing up a sweaty storm at the silent disco.
Meanwhile the adults were less rebellious, queueing infront of half a dozen Food Trucks.
At one stage I thought I’d found the culprits when an oversized bumble bee and ladybird challenged passers-by to vigorously shake their tail feathers.
Thankfully further along the track sanity prevailed as the masses sat silently watching the free movie being shown on the big screen.
Sadly though, given that the movie was the popular Australian made Paper Planes, I pondered …
- The Paper Plane competition earlier in the day proved extremely popular.
- Given this there was a high likelihood of further mayhem once the movie credits rolled.
- What a terrific example of community engagement
- Most of all though I pondered about the city cleaners who will be unlikely to join in the relaxation decree for several days to come.
Happy WA Day everyone.
