On Friday morning the winners of Sculpture by the Sea Cottesloe 2015 were announced, more on that later. The morning began with a wonderful welcome to country by Richard Wally who cautioned us that while artists create the work, the pieces are then released over to ‘the audiences perception’ as we each take on our own view of the piece. That caused a slight problem for me as I pondered about one of the winning pieces today.

One of the winners was local artist Norton Flavel, you may remember him from his huge wine bladder or ‘goon bag’ last year . This year he brought us Lucky Country which he says ‘references the Australian psyche, the tension between positives and negatives and what we choose to see.’ See photo below.

Evidently the piece speaks to our convict past.
But as Wally said it’s about perception and for me as I found myself pondering about the significance of International Women’s Day, tonight all I saw was the ball and chain of marriage, is that wrong?
Did anyone else think that?
