Some of you may remember Orioles in Subiaco. Always full to the brim it was the place to be seen for many years. Sadly, even though it’s been through several reincarnations it has yet to reach the same level of popularity. The latest rebranding Subidoo may have a chance.
Anyone remember the loveable cartoon Scooby-Doo, originally broadcast in the 1970’s? It was about a teenage rock band who solved mysteries between gigs. Invariably the Great Dane, Scooby-Doo, would solve the mystery, but not before his human mate Shaggy had got himself into trouble and yelled out ‘Scooby-Doo Where Are You?’ It was with these images in mind that I sat in the back of the new restaurant in Subiaco.
Scooby-Doo was known for his love of dressing up and taking on different disguises. Subidoo seems to have this in common as depending on where you look the interior is part bar part restaurant, part coffee pick up.
Taking up most of the interior of the restaurant is a long central table for larger groups or sharing. Closer to the bar area there are half a dozen high tables and stool. Along the left hand side there’s a long leather bench with tables at normal height.
The décor is clean, fresh, paired back grey and white tones with an air conditioning vent running through middle of the ceiling and green potted plants on the tables. If you’re that way inclined you can see into the kitchen and watch your meal being prepared.
The waitresses added to the look in their butchers aprons.
And the food?
I ordered a fish burger which looked a lot like the ones you see in almost all of Perth at the moment. I was surprised that it came with chips, really good chips. I was even more surprised by the delicious crunchy South American flavoured snapper.
I also spied a good looking five spiced pork dish going by.
Aside from the restaurant and bar areas there’s also a section off to one side where people used to rush in and grab a coffee. I believe the owners have other ideas for this section in the future, so it’s a case of watch this space.
As I left I a refreshing spray of water soaked the atmosphere on the balcony and I pondered:
- All in all it was a good quick meal in a very nice atmosphere;
- I can see it doing well on a Friday night;
- It’s worth going past just for the water spray in summer;
- I’m sure Shaggy and his crew would have been happy propped up at the bar;
- Here’s hoping the mysteries that plagued this restaurants namesake don’t arise and if they do hopefully there’ll be a friendly Great Dane nearby.
