The British are coming (British Film Festival)

2

Most of us in Perth grew up with British television so it’s a no brainer that we’d enjoy the British Film Festival right? Last week I went to see a preview movie called A Long Way Down and I can confirm that if the rest of the films are as good as this one it’s going to be a great festival.

Thanks to British Film Festival

The fact that A Long Way Down sees Pierce Brosnan and Toni Collette team up already had me interested, and then there was the story, an adaptation of a novel by Nick Hornby.

The movie starts on New Years Eve with Martin Sharp (Brosnan) standing on the roof of a London skyscraper contemplating jumping. Life hasn’t gone according to plan for Sharp, his love of fame over family has seen him lose a coveted television gig and do a brief stint in jail. But just as he’s about to jump the rooftop door opens.

Enter Maureen (Collette) who hopes Sharp won’t take long. The duo soon becomes a trio as Jess (Imogen Filth) arrives and finally J.J. (Aaron Paul) arrives with pizza.

After some discussion Jess asks when is the next big date that people commit suicide. Consequently a pact is made to stay alive until Valentine’s Day and they go their separate ways. But life has a habit of bringing people back together.

A Long Way Down is a beautiful, funny, thoughtful, poignant tale that explores why people might consider checking out. Just when you think it might fall into a cliché the film takes a different turn. Collette, Brosnan and Paul are all great, but for me Filth steals the show.

For some bizarre reason this movie will only be shown during the festival. This means you can only see it in Perth on November 7 and 13th. I strongly recommend you go and see this movie, it’s a wonderful exploration of a very tough topic. It will leave you pondering about:
  1. What makes life worthwhile.
  2. You never know what’s going to happen down the track.
  3. Other people probably need you, just as much as you need them.
