New cafe performs miracle with uni students (Oxford Yard)

This week I stumbled across a new cafe in Leederville called Oxford Yard and was immediately blown away by the miracles taking place inside.

The first, and most mind-blowing sight was witnessed two steps inside the front door. There in the display cabinet were a range of salads. Nothing special about that you say. True but ponder this … the café is situated next to a huge TAFE college. You see where I’m coming from?

My past life as a university student was heavily fuelled by vinegar sodden chips bought from the campus ref. The only time anything remotely ‘salady’ passed our lips was when a Mexican café arrived selling cheap bean tostadas. Even then the salad was limited to a few token pieces of lettuce and tomato that were quickly smothered in cheese, thereby rendering the nutritional value of the lettuce null and void.

So I wasn’t expecting brightly coloured, fresh, crisp salads. Nor was expecting a large brussel sprout salad! I ask you … how many times have you heard students refer to ‘brussel sprouts’, (discounting if they are referencing the likes of Monty Python), of course? If that isn’t enough the plate was empty! Empty! Clearly something strange was going on in downtown Leederville, I pondered.
But then I moved further along the counter and saw a possible explanation.
Chocolate brownies the size of a 6 foot 7 waterpolo players palm. Perhaps the students were onto something …
Could a serve of brussell sprouts expunge any brownie induced guilt?

Sadly I wouldn’t find out as I had chosen the pumpkin, fetta filo parcel which came with a salad (including the last of the brussel sprouts). The meal was fresh, delicious and so big that there was no way I could fit in a coffee let alone a piece of cake.

Speaking of coffee another miracle were the prices … a cappuccino for $3.20 and hot chocolate for $3.70.

And the last miracle? Incredibly friendly, helpful staff.

It was an absolute pleasure to dine at Oxford Yard. It’s definitely worth walking up Oxford Street a few metres to get to Oxford Yard. I’ll definitely be going back to try one of the pies, I just have to fast for a day or two so I can fit it in.
Congratulations to the chef and all involved in this little gem in Leederville.
