What do you do when you can’t get into the Western Derby at Subiaco Oval? You create your own MiniSubi naturally. That was the approach of Eagles sponsor SGIO, Channel 7 and 96fm. I was extremely lucky to be wondering past on Saturday and get invited inside.
Inside I found six television screens, an inside bar, an outdoor beer garden and about 300 hopeful West Coast Eagles fans.

The 96fm crew interviewing Glen Jackovich, where he explained …
‘West Coast won the first nine, then the Dockers turned the corner. West Coast have lost that underdog mentality. They need to go to work today, need to play hard.’
‘It’s a brutal game, a young man’s game … I got old man’s syndrome and knew it was time to retire … I think it will be Dean Cox’s last year.’
After the game …
‘It was an admirable loss. The Eagles have to build. The young players showed they have some resolve today. Be patient.’
And when asked about the times when Mick Malthouse walked through the player pack after the game …
‘I used to hide behind people so he couldn’t eyeball me.’

As I wandered back out at the end of the day I pondered …
-
As inaugural events go this was a brilliant idea which I’m sure will get repeated, at least I hope it will.
-
Congrats to the Dockersfor the great game and taking home the prize.
-
You never know what can happen if you just stop and ask, ‘what’s going on in there’, you might just get invited inside.
-
Don’t be afraid to say ‘yes’ when an opportunity comes your way.
