When is a manicure not a manicure? (Marketing to Men)

Sex Sells, or so the saying goes, but how do you sell to the sexes? More specifically, how do you market to men? Wandering around Perth CBD last week I found an interesting example, that also shed some further light on the whole Mars/Venus theory.

This ad left me pondering whether ‘manicure’ was a dirty word … for men, which is really weird considering it’s a MAN … icure, but evidently so. Instead the ad spruiked a service called ‘Hand Detailing’.

Similarly a pedicure, became you guessed it … ‘Feet Detailing’.

For a woman the word ‘detailing’ conjures up images of harsh, abrasive, metal on metal scrubbing until an entire top surface is removed. Or a thorough drenching and intrusive vacuuming out is undertaken until all is returned to its pristine original condition. Nothing relaxing or pampering about either of those options.

And then there’s the ‘Overhaul’, which only takes 60 minutes. Hmm so men can complete a total Overhaul in one hour, whereas we’ve only just finished our tea, disrobed and lay down by then.

Probably best not to ponder about a lube and oil change then.

For anyone interested you can avail yourself of these services at Guys Grooming in Hay Street, near the Perth Murray Street Car Park. It sounds like a man cave for modern day Neanderthals.
