When I first entered the Perth Arena for this year’s Hopman Cup the roof was closed and the lights dimmed, while Spain’s Fernando Verdasco stood off to the side waiting to enter the court.  Next thing I knew he was swamped in smoke, and for a split second I pondered …

  1. Oh no, had the new high-tech ‘under seat air-conditioning system’ gone haywire? Had it started sucking in the desperate last minute puffs of the smokers hanging around the outskirts of the building?
  2. Had the would-be MastersChefs in the kitchen gone too far with the smoked cod?
  3. Was it a badly timed fire drill?
  4. Would my, as yet unused hero gene, finally kick in and see me jumping over the railing to break open the Fire Equipment cupboard behind Verdasco. If so what would I find?

… within minutes the search lights were on, the roof opened and the smoke evaporated … no extractor fan required. Now that would be handy at home when cooking sausages … a skilled I’ve yet to master.
