Sometimes I ponder what it would have been like to clink glasses with the likes of Picasso, or fight Andy Warhol for the last spoonful of tomato soup. No doubt I’d have sat in the background watching on from afar, but perhaps imbibed by the local ale I’d dare to ask a question, but what to ask …

With limited art knowledge I’d probably fall back on something naff like … do you actually eat soup? Thanks to the Friends of the Art Gallery we have the chance to find out the answer to this, and far more important questions … a chance to see inside the man responsible for such iconic images.
In the 19070’s former AGWA Director Alan Dodge AM worked for a painting conservator housed in Mark Rothko’s old studio.
The studio was the place to be with key members of the art scene dropping in and out. One of those drop-ins was Andy Warhol.
‘Andy would usually show up in the late morning decked out in high boots and leather jacket and ever-more extravagant wigs’, explained Alan.
‘He was there to gossip, always mining people for graphic details’.
On Monday 12th November Alan Dodge will be revisiting those times at the Picasso to Warhol Film Festival Closing Night Party. I remember standing at the Picasso Film Night at the beginning of the year, and thinking that I must put this date in my diary, and now here it is the end of the year already.
Aside from getting a peak into Warhol, the man, Alan will be giving insights into the Warhol classics on show upstairs in the Picasso to Warhol exhibition.
‘Warhol was not only a mirror to what was going on around him, but he himself was as much the art as what he was creating – changing the definition of art for all time.’ said Alan
The cocktail-style evening will have an American theme, including Hullabaloo Hoppers, American tunes and refreshments. The film Ten Lizes will be screened, which looks at the creation of his portrait of Elizabeth Taylor.
If you haven’t been to the Picasso to Warhol exhibition it’s closing soon. For information go to
