Meditating through birth

6
Imagine sitting in your chair, arms by your side, eyes closed, breathing deeply.  Suddenly you’re thrown back, legs roughly thrust into the air … the birth has begun … your baby is being born … has been born.

Now imagine hearing people muttering off in the distance. You know they’re talking about your baby but you can’t hear what’s being said. You could open your eyes but you don’t. Instead you keep them closed and concentrate on making sure your breathing is regular. So it was this morning.
Fresh from slumber I was about to start my morning meditation. I’ve been trying to develop this habit for some time now as some of you know. My aim is to ensure I get some Me Time before throwing my day open to the forces that be. I was about to start when my phone bleeped a text …

‘Seen the paper’, it read, ‘Me Time reviewed in The West’.
Eek! To say I was overjoyed would be a massive understatement.
As the initial glow wore off, and the days chores nagged, I tried to get comfortable in the straight backed chair and meditate. Instead my brain started to ponder … was it positive, what if it’s negative? So I sent off a text asking that, put down the phone and settled in once more.
For the next fifteen minutes as I tried to concentrate all I could think of was that my book, my baby, was now well and truly in the world and …being judged. Other writers out there will know the feeling. With each beeping text coming in, as more friends read the paper, my brain was punctured with what ifs. I’d always thought a review in The West Australian would be fantastic, but what if it was scathing. I desperately tried to ignore the beeps … futile really, clearly under these circumstances meditation was going to be … impossible.
I opened my eyes, read the first message and sighed as I saw … ‘lovely review’, … phew!
Apology: To anyone who clicked on this post thinking they’d hear tips on how to alleviate birth pain through meditation, I’m sorry, though I’d ponder that too would be … impossible.

  1. You tricked me! The “apology” applies to people like me. I should have known!! Anyway if you have to have your meditation session interrupted by something I’d say this kind of text is the one.
