You’re invited to the Players Welcome Party at the Hyundai Hopman Cup would you go? What if you happen to be in Florida when the invitation arrives? The long haul flight to Perth means many hours confined in a small space watching movies, playing solitaire and trying to eat really slowly just to extend your meal so you have something to do. Still going?
What if the schedule means you arrive in Perth late afternoon. Once you’ve cleared customers you’ll have to go straight to the party, no stopping, not even a shower just straight from the plane to the party. Well?
Okay what if in the same year you celebrated your 91st birthday?
Well if you’re Mrs Lucy Hopman, wife of Harry Hopman who the tournament is named after, of course you do. What’s more, just as you have for the past 24 years, you arrive smiling and waving at the standing ovation from the small crowd of players and others before you.
So how long do you stay? An hour? Until the speeches end?
No you stay until the party ends.
Now that’s true inspiration.
