Rear Window Melbourne style

Sometimes it pays to look beyond the usual rush of the day.

A quick glance out the window confirms that the clock has indeed ticked past 6pm. Parallel rows of white and red lights indicate a string of people trapped in their cars at the end of another busy day. Life being lived at the usual rush.

Glancing the other way, large flames belch out of the 8 gas towers in front of the Crown Towers hotel, signaling the beginning of the night’s hourly entertainment that will continue until midnight.

Directly across the river above the daily rush, there’s a room in the Melbourne Convention Centre with a swag of red chairs laid out in neat rows.

Inside a flurry of activities ensues, large black umbrella shrouded lights are turned on, as more and more people start entering the room and milling around. Clearly something important is about to happen.

Around 6.30pm the audience streams in and take their seats.

Watching on my thoughts soon wander off to memories of Alfred Hitchcock’s Rear Window.

Turning off the lights in my room I let my mind off the leash and pondered what I might see….

  1. A murder? Unlikely unless it’s by a particularly skilled murderer who delights in working with the lights on
  2. Pamela Stephenson talking up her latest book, Sex Life. Again the blinding bright lights may be a bit of a put off given the topic
  3. The St Kilda school girl, Kim Duthie, who caused a stir earlier in the day. Again unlikely as from memory her dalliances were sans lights.
  4. The just landed Dalai Lama who seems extremely relaxed lights on or off, and is talking at the same venue later on.

Just like Rear Window after nearly two hours I was still sitting in the dark waiting for the answer to be revealed.
